Repair Services
GearboxRepair.
Gearboxes are critical to transmitting power and torque across countless industrial applications. When they fail, downtime is costly. REM restores gearbox performance, corrects root-cause failures, and extends service life across all makes and configurations.
Common Failure Modes
We Fix the Cause, Not Just the Symptom.
Most gearbox failures trace back to one of four root causes. Identifying and correcting the actual cause — not just replacing damaged parts — is what prevents the same failure from returning six months later.
Gear Wear & Tooth Damage
Pitting, spalling, scoring, and tooth breakage from overloading, contaminated lubricant, or inadequate backlash. We inspect gear condition, determine the wear mechanism, and replace or repair gear sets to restore proper mesh and load distribution.
Bearing Failure
Bearing failures from contamination, incorrect lubrication, overloading, or misalignment are among the most common gearbox problems. We identify the failure mode, replace bearings to OEM or upgraded specifications, and correct the underlying condition.
Seal & Lubrication Failures
Leaking seals allow lubricant loss and contaminant ingress — accelerating gear and bearing wear. We replace worn seals, inspect lubrication passages, and verify correct lubricant type and fill level before reassembly.
Misalignment & Shaft Damage
Shaft misalignment, fretting corrosion on keyways, and bent or worn shafts create vibration, uneven loading, and accelerated wear throughout the drivetrain. We machine, repair, or replace shafts and verify alignment before return to service.
What We Repair
All Makes. All Configurations.
REM repairs gearboxes across all major design types and brands — from standard parallel shaft reducers to complex planetary units for heavy industrial and specialty applications.
Parallel Shaft & Helical
Standard industrial reducers for conveyors, mixers, and process equipment across all major brands.
Bevel & Bevel-Helical
Right-angle drives for conveyors, fans, and rotating equipment requiring directional power transfer.
Worm Gear Reducers
High-ratio reducers for low-speed, high-torque applications including material handling and positioning equipment.
Planetary Gearboxes
Compact, high-torque-density units for demanding applications in utilities, mining, and heavy manufacturing.
Our Repair Process
Root-Cause Focused. Documented Throughout.
Every gearbox repair follows a disciplined process — from incoming inspection and root-cause diagnosis through precision rebuild, testing, and documented verification before the unit returns to service.
Incoming Inspection & Documentation
Complete visual and dimensional inspection on arrival — documenting existing condition, nameplate data, and visible failure modes before disassembly begins. Oil samples taken where applicable to identify contamination or wear debris patterns.
Disassembly & Root-Cause Diagnosis
Full teardown with careful documentation of all component condition. Gear tooth wear patterns, bearing damage modes, seal condition, and shaft alignment are all assessed to identify the root cause — not just the damaged parts.
Precision Repair & Parts Replacement
Gear sets, bearings, seals, shafts, and housings are repaired or replaced using OEM or upgraded components. Machining performed in-house to restore bores, keyways, and mating surfaces to exact tolerances.
Reassembly & Backlash Verification
Precision reassembly with correct gear mesh, backlash verification, and bearing preload settings. Housing bores and shaft alignments checked against OEM specifications before final assembly.
Run Testing & Vibration Analysis
Every repaired gearbox is run-tested, vibration-checked, and inspected for leaks before release. Temperature and noise signatures are verified against acceptable limits and documented in a test record delivered with the unit.
Beyond the Shop
Field Service & New Gearbox Supply
Gearbox problems don't stop at the unit itself. REM's field service team provides on-site troubleshooting, alignment, and reinstallation — and when replacement is the smarter call, we supply new gearboxes through Bay State Bearings.
On-Site Field Service
On-site troubleshooting, removal, precision alignment, and reinstallation — making sure your gearbox integrates correctly with the rest of your drivetrain before we leave your facility.
Vibration Analysis & Diagnostics
Field vibration analysis to diagnose gearbox problems in place — identifying gear mesh frequencies, bearing defects, and misalignment signatures before they become catastrophic failures.
New Gearbox Supply
When replacement is more cost-effective than repair, REM supplies new gearboxes through Bay State Bearings — Rexnord, Falk, Nord, SEW Eurodrive, and more — matched to your load and application.
Why REM
Mechanical Depth. Root-Cause Focus.
Nearly a century of industrial drivetrain expertise, in-house machining capability, and the stocking distribution depth to supply replacement units when repair isn't the right call.
